Mogadishu fire kills child, causes extensive damage

MOGADISHU — On Monday evening, the Somali capital was struck by a tragic event when a massive fire broke out at Suuq Bacaad, the country’s second-largest open-air market, resulting in the death of a young girl and the destruction of hundreds of market stalls, according to reports from Hiiraan Online.

The fire, which erupted in the Yaqshid district, caused financial losses estimated in millions of Somali shillings, forcing hundreds of traders to close their shops and lose their livelihoods, Hiiraan Online reported.

Suleiman Mahmoud Fargah, Commissioner of Yaqshid district, stated that an electrical fault is the likely cause of the blaze, with investigations ongoing to determine the exact circumstances.

Some traders suggested that the fire might have started due to piled-up garbage in a corner of the market, while Federal MP Yasin Abdullahi Mohamud Farey did not rule out the possibility of deliberate arson, noting that the rapid spread of the fire “raises suspicions” and called for a transparent and impartial investigation.

During a field visit to the scene, Mogadishu Mayor and Banadir Governor Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab announced plans to construct internal roads within Suuq Bacaad and other major markets to enable faster emergency response access. Muungaab said, “These roads are essential for saving lives and protecting property, and will be implemented in full consultation with traders and shop owners.”

Despite the efforts of municipal fire crews, emergency teams from Hormuud Telecom, and local volunteers, the fire took several hours to extinguish due to narrow alleys and densely packed goods, hindering containment efforts.

A joint team of market officials and local government is currently assessing the damage and coordinating compensation and reconstruction efforts. This incident, according to Hiiraan Online, highlights the fragile infrastructure and lack of safety systems in vital markets across Mogadishu.
