SoDMA issues field report on worsening humanitarian crisis

MOGADISHU — The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has released a new field report warning of a sharp deterioration in humanitarian conditions across multiple regions, with critical focus on Awdal, Hiraan, and Gedo provinces—areas now grappling with severe drought, mass displacement, and ongoing armed conflict.

The report underscores the escalating crisis facing tens of thousands of families, marked by acute food and water shortages, displacement, and disruption of essential services. SoDMA is calling for an urgent, well-coordinated humanitarian response to avert a deeper catastrophe.

Awdal region Faces Devastating Drought

Awdal is currently experiencing one of the worst droughts in recent memory, driven by multiple failed rainy seasons and extreme temperatures exceeding 40°C. The lack of rainfall has led to water scarcity, pasture degradation, livestock losses, and a sharp rise in food prices.

More than 600,000 people are affected across Awdal, with an estimated 364,000 in dire need of humanitarian assistance, particularly in the districts of Borama, Baki, Lughaya, and Zeila. Borama remains the worst-hit, with 56% of its population severely impacted by the drought.

Immediate humanitarian priorities include: emergency water trucking, food distribution, rehabilitation of water points, and the deployment of mobile health and nutrition teams focusing on maternal and child care.

Mass Displacement in Hiraan and Gedo Amid Conflict

In Hiraan, armed clashes and attacks by Al-Shabaab since June 2025 have displaced more than 85,000 people, disrupting services and threatening the well-being of communities in Mahaas, Buloburte, and Moqokori. At least seven health facilities have been shut down due to insecurity.

In Gedo, fighting in Beled Hawo has displaced over 38,000 people, including 10,000 who have fled across the border into Kenya. Around 24,000 people are currently facing crisis or emergency levels of food insecurity, while communication blackouts and suspended flights are hindering relief efforts.

Call for Immediate Action

SoDMA is urgently appealing to all partners—national and international—to mobilize resources and coordinate efforts to alleviate suffering and protect lives in the affected regions. The Federal Government of Somalia reaffirmed its commitment to leading a comprehensive humanitarian response amidst growing environmental and security challenges.
