PM orders immediate action to address drought in Awdal

MOGADISHU — Somali Prime Minister (PM) Hamsa Abdi Barre has issued urgent directives to all relevant government bodies to mobilize resources and deliver emergency assistance to communities severely affected by the ongoing drought in the Awdal region.

During the Federal Cabinet’s weekly meeting in Mogadishu, the Ministry of Interior and the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) presented a detailed report highlighting the worsening humanitarian situation in Saylac, Lughaya, and surrounding rural areas, where prolonged drought has devastated livestock and farmland, threatening the livelihoods of vulnerable populations.

The Prime Minister emphasized the critical need for swift and coordinated action from all responsible agencies and called on civil society and international partners to support the relief efforts.

“This is a national emergency. Every hour counts in saving the lives of our people,” he stated.

The drought gripping the Awdal region represents a severe test for Somalia’s resilience amid ongoing climate challenges. The prolonged dry conditions have decimated pastoral livelihoods, which remain the backbone of the local economy. The loss of livestock and crop failures not only jeopardize food security but also risk triggering displacement and increased vulnerability among already marginalized communities.

This emergency underscores the urgent need for strengthened early warning systems, sustainable water management, and diversified livelihood strategies to reduce dependency on climate-sensitive sectors. Moreover, coordinated government response and international support are vital to prevent further deterioration and to build long-term resilience in the face of recurrent drought cycles.
