MOGADISHU — An urgent humanitarian crisis is rapidly unfolding in Somalia’s Hiiraan region, where intensified conflict involving the extremist Khawaarij group has displaced over 60,000 people, sparking alarm among national and regional authorities.
In a high-level meeting held today at the headquarters of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) in Mogadishu, Chairman Mohamoud Moalim Abdulle met with Hirshabelle Vice President Yusuf Ahmed Hagar Dabageed to coordinate an immediate and unified humanitarian response to the growing emergency.
Vice President Dabageed painted a grim picture of the situation on the ground, reporting that thousands of families have fled their homes amid escalating violence. Many are now struggling without adequate shelter, facing severe food shortages and critical water scarcity, particularly in and around Beledweyne, the region’s capital.
“The displaced are living in dire conditions and are in desperate need of urgent aid,” said Dabageed, calling for swift action to avert further suffering.
Abdulle expressed deep concern over the worsening situation and pledged SoDMA’s full commitment to mobilize rapid relief efforts.
“We are dedicating our full capacity to ensure that lifesaving aid reaches those in desperate need,” he affirmed. “Time is critical, and we must act decisively.”
Together, both leaders issued a strong appeal to humanitarian organizations, local and international partners, and donor agencies to urgently scale up support. They proposed the creation of a joint coordination framework to align efforts, optimize resources, and deliver assistance in a timely and effective manner.
The officials also stressed the need for enhanced collaboration and information sharing between government agencies and humanitarian actors. Such cooperation, they noted, is vital to ensure that emergency planning, resource deployment, and field operations are harmonized — allowing help to reach those most affected without delay or duplication.
This unified response signals a shared determination to confront the crisis, alleviate suffering, and lay the groundwork for stability and recovery in one of Somalia’s most affected regions.
