MOGADISHU — The Minister for Environment and Climate Change of the federal government of Somalia Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi announced that the ministry is fighting hard the importation and disposal of single-use bags throughout the country.
Khadija urged all businesses and companies to find eco-friendly alternatives. The ministry also warned the cutting of trees and indicated anyone who violates will face legal consequences.
Minister Khadija pointed out that the Federal Government of Somalia is focused to deal with environmental degradation and therefore urged the Somali community to closely work with the ministry to prevent the imminent danger that may arise from environmental degradation.
“People who cut down trees and those who import bags to our country are like terrorists .Climate change pose serious danger to our country, environmental degradation by cutting down of trees is dangerous and anyone who violates will face legal consequences ,” said the Minister of Environment, Khadija Al- Makhzoumi.
The ministry urged companies and entrepreneurs in Somalia to invent alternatives to plastic bags that do not harm the environment and cautioned those who cut down trees
Climate change enthusiasts and environmental activists have severally warned of the problems caused by climate change and that the cutting down of trees poses a great risk, they suggested the Federal Government of Somalia to take legal actions against those who violates to save the community.
