MOGADISHU — The World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday it has ramped up response to curb cholera transmission in Somalia.
“WHO and health partners have scaled up implementation of cholera response interventions in Kismayo, Beled Hawo, and other drought-affected districts,” said WHO in its latest update on the waterborne disease, adding that 4,032 suspected cases of cholera including 15 associated deaths were reported from 26 districts of Somalia since January.
The current cholera outbreak is taking place in the context of other ongoing outbreaks, high rates of malnutrition, and the escalating drought, all of which are exacerbating the fragility of Somalia’s humanitarian situation and have led to the large displacement of people, according to the UN health agency.
According to the WHO, Somalia has had uninterrupted cholera transmission in 26 drought-affected districts since 2022 and in the Banadir region since the drought period of 2017.
