UN calls for probe in clashes after 20 killed in Las Anod

MOGADISHU — The UN human rights chief on Tuesday called on Somali authorities to carry out an independent, effective and impartial investigation into the killing of at least 20 people in clashes between security forces and clan leaders in Las Anod, northern Somalia.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said an estimated 119 people, including children, have been injured in the clashes that started on Sunday.

“These potentially unlawful killings come just a month after at least 20,000 people were displaced by clashes in Las Anod, and could contribute to further displacement, compounding the already fragile humanitarian situation in the region,” Turk said in a statement.

He also expressed concern about reports that the clashes are continuing on Tuesday with additional claims of new casualties.

“I call on the authorities to conduct a credible and impartial investigation into the clashes to determine who is responsible and hold them to account in fair trials, including for reported damage to homes,” Turk said.
