Taha receives representatives of UNHCR in the HoA and the GCC

JEDDAH — H.E. the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, received, on 13 November 2022, in his office at the headquarters of the OIC General Secretariat, H.E. Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Affey, Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in the Horn of Africa, and Mr. Khaled Khalifa, Representative of the UNHCR to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

During the meeting, the importance of bilateral relations between the OIC and the UNHCR was emphasized. The two sides exchanged views on the situation of refugees and displaced persons in the Muslim world, especially in the Horn of Africa region, which is experiencing catastrophic humanitarian conditions as a result of the droughts that affected the region, especially Somalia, which suffers from deteriorating humanitarian conditions, and a security situation that threatens its stability.

H.E. the OIC Secretary-General stressed the importance of acting swiftly in order to avoid the spread of famine, on a large scale in Somalia and the region, that threatens the lives of millions of displaced persons and refugees, especially children, women and the elderly. The Secretary General indicated that, regarding this humanitarian disaster, the OIC shares the UNHCR and many humanitarian partners, concern over the scale of the international response to famine in Somalia, and warns against the delay in humanitarian intervention and the need for immediate action before it is too late.
