2nd COVID-19 wave spreads at alarming rate in Somalia

MOGADISHU — The rate of new Coronavirus infection cases and deaths in Somalia is alarming, as the country continu-es to struggle with the second wave of the pandemic.

No official statement has issued whether this resurgence was fueled by a new of the variant virus which was termed as highly transmissible.

This trend continues to be observed even after the government introduced new measures last month, including banning public meetings.

According to the ministry of health, Somalia recorded eight deaths making the total death toll 239.

In the last 24 hours, 266 new cases of the virus were recorded after the ministry tested 1,807 samples across the country.

Since the pandemic onset, Somalia has not imposed a lock-down or formally shut its borders.

The country’s total number of COVID-19 cases now stands at 7,257 and recoveries at 3,808.

Somalia is yet to begin inoculating its people but is set to receive 1.2 million doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine this February, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
