landmine blast in Mogadishu leaves five dead

MOGADISHU — The head of the Somali custodial corps escaped unharmed after a landmine explosion ripped through his convoy on Thursday morning.

The attack killed at least 5 people, including 4 soldiers. Al-Shabaab said in a statement it was behind the explosion without providing details of the casualties.

Police sealed off the scene after the blast as ambulances rushed the wounded to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

The attack comes amidst tight security measures in the capital with many checkpoints erected on the main roads to avert Al-Shabaab attacks.
