Somaliland: Court gives light sentences to men accused of raping a young orphan

HARGEISA — Seven men accused of raping Awo Harir, an orphan in Hargeisa, have been sentenced by the Hargeisa Regional Court this morning.

Somaliland police have arrested the seven suspects in connection with the alleged rape of Awo Harir at the orphanage.

The court sentenced two of the seven defendants to three years in prison each. The other five were sentenced to six months in prison each.

Mawlid Abdi Muse, the Attorney General of Marodijeh region told reporters that they are not satisfied with the verdict and that they plan to appeal the regional court ruling.

The girl was also said to be pregnant by men accused of raping her.

The rape of the young orphan girl has angered the Somaliland public, today’s court decision is to further upset the victim’s family and the general public.
