Somalia launches new COVID-19 quarantine center

MOGADISHU — The Somali government has opened a new Coronavirus quarantine center at the Banadir Hospital in Mogadishu.

Acting Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled presided over the launch of the facility, which consists of 87 rooms and contains 300 beds and other equipment necessary for the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.

The center was rebuilt and equipped in a joint effort by the Somali Ministry of Health and Hormuud Telecommunication.

The development comes even as Covid-19 cases in the country have gone down in recent weeks.

As the number of new infections continues to drop, the government has decided to lift all restrictions imposed to contain the disease at a recent cabinet meeting.

The country has registered 3,212 Covid-19 cases in total. Patients who recovered from the disease number at 1,562, while the number of deaths stands at 93.
