Somaliland’s house of Gurti debates child protection bill

HARGEISA —  Members of the Somaliland House of Elders, started debating the Somaliland Child Protection Law No. 102/2022, which was passed by Somaliland’s House of Representatives.

Most of the MPs who took part in the debate on the Somaliland Child Protection Act, Act Lr. 102/2022 proposed that a commission be set up to correct the provisions of this Act.

After the debate was over, the Speaker of the Somaliland House of Elders, Mr. Saleban Mohamud Aden, informed the members that the bill would be reviewed by the House Social Affairs Sub-Committee.

Speaker Saleban urged the commission to submit the complete law next week for further debate and vote.

Child protection advocates say the law is needed in Somaliland given the country’s dismal record on threats faced by children and their families.
