Officials in Puntland raise the red flag over COVID-19 cases

GAROWE — Authorities in Somalia’s Puntland region have warned of an upsurge of the COVID-19 pandemic as the Federal Government records over 30 deaths in the last week alone.

Garowe Mayor Ahmed Sa’id Muse said Saturday ten people had succumbed to the disease in one week with several infections recorded within the state.

According to the mayor, the administrative capital Garowe and Qardho town in Bari region have been adversely affected.

Two deaths were recorded in the State in the last 24 hours. Records from the Federal Ministry of Health indicate an average of five deaths daily in the last week.

To date, Somalia has recorded 870 deaths and 16, 195 COVID-19 cases since the first case was detected on March 2020.
