MOGADISHU — At least one police officer was killed and several people wounded, a landmine exploded in Jazeera beach in Lower Shabelle region, an official said.
Hussein Jilow, Jazeera area Commissioner, said the landmine exploded at a checkpoint and killed an officer manning the beach.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Hussein pointed a finger on al-Qaeda- affiliated group al-Shabaab who carried out similar attacks in the past.
Jazeera beach is located around 13km south of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. It is a very popular beach destination for locals who enjoy relaxing at this beach every day.
Despite being forced out of the capital and other major urban areas in Somalia by national and African Union peacekeeping forces, Al-Shabaab militants have carried out deadly bombings and attacks in Mogadishu and elsewhere.
Their main targets have included hotels, military checkpoints, and the presidential palace including social gatherings.
