Ministry of environment strengthens national partnerships to protect climate and environment

MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Federal Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has continued to strengthen its diplomatic and field efforts aimed at protecting the environment and supporting local communities in addressing the severe impacts of climate change through the signing of a strategic memorandum of understanding with SOS Somalia to advance joint cooperation in environmental sustainability and comprehensive climate action initiatives.

According to an official institutional update published today on the Ministry’s verified Facebook page, the memorandum was formally signed by State Minister Ahmed Omar on behalf of the Ministry, while SOS Somalia was represented by its Country Director, Abdulkadir Dhaqane, forming a key part of broader sovereign government efforts to build more effective partnerships supporting environmental and developmental frameworks across the nation.

The bilateral agreement focuses extensively on designing and implementing joint programs dedicated to protecting vital natural resources, expanding nationwide afforestation and ecosystem restoration campaigns, and promoting modern technological solutions that help vulnerable communities adapt flexibly to climate-related challenges while significantly reducing their cascading humanitarian and environmental impacts.

Both sides emphasized during the signing ceremony the critical importance of investing strategically in youth awareness by actively encouraging the participation of children and young people in environmental activities and grassroots community initiatives, thereby directly contributing to anchoring a culture of environmental responsibility and sustainable stewardship of natural resources.

The Ministry also stressed within its statement that close technical cooperation with national institutions as well as international humanitarian and development organizations represents a core foundational pillar in building a sustainable environmental response, particularly in light of Somalia’s growing challenges related to recurrent drought, desertification, and accelerating global climate shifts.

Somalia’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change continues to execute a comprehensive portfolio of national programs and initiatives aimed at strengthening public environmental awareness, supporting rural community structures, and enhancing structural resilience to climate risks within a broader development vision that strictly seeks to balance ecological protection with improving human well-being across the country.

This synchronized partnership by the Federal Ministry of Environment underscores a decisive institutional transition toward localized, proactive climate adaptation frameworks. By integrating youth engagement with ecological restoration and climate innovation, the government effectively creates dynamic social safety nets that shield vulnerable populations from natural disasters while reinforcing the foundational natural resources essential for durable, long-term nationwide stabilization.
