​Somali-European cooperation to strengthen human rights principles

​MOGADISHU — Dr. Maryan Qasim Ahmed, Chairperson of the National Independent Human Rights Commission of Somalia, held a high-level meeting yesterday with H.E. Francesca Di Mauro, the European Union Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Somalia, to discuss prospects for joint cooperation.

The Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported via its official page that the discussions focused on formulating integrated strategies to enhance the partnership between the Commission and the EU in the fields of protecting public freedoms and developing human rights oversight mechanisms.

The meeting addressed ways to activate specialized programs aimed at advancing human rights, with an emphasis on exchanging technical and institutional expertise to ensure that national practices align with recognized international standards.

According to the (SONNA) report, both parties reviewed ambitious plans to boost the Commission’s operational efficiency, enabling it to fulfill its constitutional mandates with complete independence and high professionalism in monitoring and documenting human rights status.

The meeting also touched upon the significance of European support in solidifying the pillars of good governance and promoting the rule of law through initiatives that support transparency, equality, and equal opportunities for all Somali citizens without exception.

The discussions emphasized the necessity of activating accountability tools and developing the judicial and human rights systems to contribute to creating a safe and stable environment that supports the state’s efforts in achieving sustainable development and comprehensive social peace.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides stressed the importance of continuing strategic dialogue and coordinating joint efforts to ensure tangible results that positively reflect the reality of human rights and bolster international community confidence in national institutions.
