KAMPALA — The Federal Government of Somalia has affirmed its dedication to addressing the urgent challenges of climate change by actively participating in the 6th Meeting of African Climate Finance Directors, which concluded today in Kampala, Uganda. The meeting focused on strategies for Africa to better leverage global climate finance.
The high-level Somali delegation was led by Mr. Liban Obsiye, Executive Director of the Somali National Climate Fund. In his address, Obsiye outlined the government’s efforts to accelerate access to and utilization of climate funding, stressing that Somalia’s primary focus is on implementing urgent priorities for both prevention and adaptation to climate change.
Executive Director Obsiye stated: “We presented Somalia’s progress and the opportunities we have in climate finance. The exchange of knowledge and experience is crucial to strengthen the resilience of Somalia and Africa as a whole.”
Obsiye specifically acknowledged the leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for prioritizing climate finance to secure a more prosperous future for the Somali people. The delegation also included representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the National Economic Commission.
Somalia remains one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, facing recurring floods and droughts. Its participation in the meeting underscores the government’s proactive stance in seeking a sustainable future and building national resilience against environmental threats.
