Somalia, UN discuss strategic partnership to develop transport infrastructure

MOGADISHU — Mohamed Farah Nuuh, Somalia’s Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, held a strategic meeting with Lionel Laurens, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Somalia, to advance cooperation in strengthening the country’s transport sector.

The discussions in Mogadishu focused on potential collaboration to upgrade Somalia’s transport infrastructure, including its vital aviation systems, as part of broader development initiatives to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation stated that the talks underscored the necessity of sustainable partnerships in the rebuilding of Somalia’s key sectors, which have suffered decades of neglect due to conflict. Improving this infrastructure is deemed critical for economic recovery, trade expansion, and the safe movement of goods and people.

Both the Ministry and the UNDP agreed to establish joint working mechanisms to accurately identify priority projects, ensure their alignment with the Somalia National Development Plan, and mobilize resources from international partners.

The engagement highlights Somalia’s determination to partner with international agencies like the UNDP—which has a long history of supporting the country’s governance, stabilisation, and development programmes—to advance its modernisation plans. Strengthening transport, especially aviation, is viewed as a strategic priority to enable Somalia to expand regional trade, improve humanitarian access, and meet international aviation standards.
