MOGADISHU — The Republic of India has sent a substantial humanitarian aid shipment to Somalia, comprising 10 tons of essential medical supplies, in a move aimed at supporting the country’s overwhelmed healthcare system amid ongoing crises.
The delivery—announced by India’s Ministry of External Affairs and shared by its official spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, on the platform X (formerly Twitter)—includes lifesaving medicines, surgical instruments, hospital equipment, and advanced medical tools.
“India’s humanitarian assistance to the people of Somalia continues,” the statement read. “This latest shipment consists of critical medicines and healthcare equipment and has now been dispatched to Mogadishu.”
According to The Tribune India, the aid comes as Somalia faces immense challenges caused by prolonged armed conflict, climate-induced disasters, and economic hardship. The country’s fragile healthcare infrastructure has been further strained by rising numbers of injuries from conflict, recurring disease outbreaks, and sustained drought—especially in remote and underserved areas.
Medical facilities across Somalia, particularly in the capital Mogadishu, are struggling to meet growing demand for services.
Officials have welcomed the Indian support, describing it as a “timely and meaningful gesture of international solidarity.”
India has a longstanding relationship with Somalia and has previously extended humanitarian support in times of need. The latest contribution is expected to enhance emergency medical response efforts and relieve pressure on healthcare workers operating in overstretched conditions.
