Somali president calls for global agricultural solidarity

ADDIS ABABA — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasized the critical need for agricultural transformation, describing it as a moral obligation and national necessity rather than a mere choice. He made these remarks during the opening of the 2nd United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Speaking at the summit, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud highlighted the event’s timely nature, noting that the world faces overlapping crises including armed conflicts, climate shocks, and widening inequalities that put unprecedented pressure on global food systems.

According to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), the president stressed that this summit is not only an opportunity for reflection but also a platform to renew global commitment to building sustainable, resilient, and inclusive food systems.

“Somalia regards agriculture as the lifeblood of its society, culture, and survival,” President Mohamud said. He underlined agriculture’s vital contribution to the nation’s GDP and socioeconomic development. He further explained that Somalia’s National Transformation Plan prioritizes agriculture as the key engine for inclusive growth, social cohesion, and national recovery.

The president reiterated Somalia’s commitment to eradicating poverty and hunger, emphasizing that “transforming agriculture is not a choice, but a moral obligation and national necessity.”

As detailed by ENA, Somalia’s strategy includes private sector-led growth, public-private partnerships, and comprehensive reforms across the agricultural value chain. Efforts are also underway to strengthen livelihoods and improve market linkages both domestically and for export.

President Mohamud underscored Somalia’s dedication to sustainable development goals and the principle of leaving no one behind. He highlighted ongoing initiatives to align regional flagship programs with national development plans.

While acknowledging progress made in agricultural transformation and food security, the president also candidly addressed the significant challenges Somalia continues to face.

In closing, he called on the international community for increased solidarity, equitable access to climate finance, technical assistance, and innovative solutions to support Somalia’s agricultural development and food system resilience.

This statement by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was reported by the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to global cooperation in tackling food insecurity and climate-related challenges.
