MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education has welcomed the Federal Government’s Council of Ministers’ approval of the newly appointed members of the National Higher Education Commission, describing it as a pivotal step toward advancing the country’s higher education system.
The Commission, established under Higher Education Law No. 30 enacted in December 2024, is tasked with providing strategic leadership, governance, and oversight for all higher education institutions in Somalia. Its core mandate includes ensuring that universities and colleges operate in accordance with the standards and principles set forth in the national Higher Education Law.
According to the Ministry, the selection process was thorough and merit-based, with officials applying strict legal criteria to identify candidates who possess the expertise, integrity, and vision necessary to guide Somalia’s higher education sector into the future.
“This is a milestone moment for education reform in Somalia,” the Ministry stated. “The Commission will play a central role in promoting quality assurance, institutional accountability, and policy coherence across all higher education institutions.”
The Ministry emphasized that the formation of the Commission will lay the foundation for a more standardized, transparent, and effective regulatory framework that will not only improve academic quality but also better serve students and contribute to the development of Somalia’s human capital.
The move signals growing momentum toward institutional reform and reflects the government’s broader commitment to rebuilding and modernizing the education sector in post-conflict Somalia.
