MOGADISHU — Today, the Second Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia, Abdisalan Abdi Ali, has launched the Somalia Climate Education Initiative aimed at building climate literacy among communities, educators, and youth and empowering them with knowledge and skills to drive sustainable solutions to climate change.
“The launch of the Somalia Climate Education Initiative marks a pivotal step in our nation’s fight against climate change. By integrating climate education into our schools and communities, we are empowering our people—especially our youth—with the knowledge and skills to build a more resilient and sustainable Somalia. This initiative is not just about education; it is about securing our future.” – Abdisalan Abdi Ali, Second Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia.
Speaking during the event, IGAD CAEP Director, Ambassador Gamal Hassan noted that for stakeholders to sustainably address the impacts of climate change on education there requires comprehensive policies that integrate climate resilience into educational systems, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to learn in a stable and supportive environment.
He added that collaborative efforts among governments, development partners, the donor community, NGOs, the private sector, and communities are essential to build resilience against the adverse effects of climate change on education. Education institutions may have no option but to focus on resilience-building, invest in infrastructure improvements, and engage in community preparedness initiatives for lasting impacts.
