MOGADISHU — In a critical meeting held yesterday, Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, Chairman of the Somalia Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), convened with the Somalia Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) led by George Conway, the Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia.
The discussion centered on the dire humanitarian conditions plaguing the nation, where over 6.9 million individuals urgently need aid. The meeting highlighted the severe strain on Somalia’s resources, exacerbated by a combination of natural disasters and ongoing conflicts.
Chairman Abdulle emphasized the relentless efforts of SoDMA since its reactivation, underscoring the government’s commitment to disaster prevention and mitigation.
“Despite the challenges, SoDMA has been working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of disasters,” Abdulle stated. He outlined the government’s readiness to fulfill its responsibilities and detailed the collaborative processes necessary for effective aid distribution.
Abdulle also addressed the upcoming Humanitarian Forum in Somalia, stressing the importance of this event in coordinating international aid efforts. He discussed the agency’s initiatives to prevent aid diversion, the scarcity of financial resources, and the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness, capacity building, and improved evacuation and coordination strategies.
The dialogue between SoDMA and the UN team marks a significant step towards addressing the multifaceted crises in Somalia, aiming for more structured and efficient humanitarian responses in the future.
