JOWHAR — A massive fire broke out at the main market in Jowhar town, the capital of the Middle Shabelle region, on Saturday morning.
According to local traders, the blaze rapidly spread to various parts of the business centers in the market in Hantiwadaag.
The fire has already destroyed three market sections, and firefighters are still battling to contain the flames. Despite their efforts, the situation remains critical due to the region’s lack of adequate fire-fighting vehicles, which has significantly hampered response times.
This incident marks the second major fire in the same market in less than a year, raising concerns about fire safety and preparedness in Jowhar. In October 2024, the fire caused substantial property losses, and despite the damage, lessons from the earlier disaster have not been fully addressed.
Local officials have not yet provided any information on casualties or the exact extent of the damage. However, images shared on social media show flames and thick smoke filling the sky over the town, painting a grim picture of the ongoing crisis.
