KISMAYO — As Somalia braces for the onset of spring rains, Jubbaland authorities have sounded the alarm on the looming threat of flooding in the region. Adan Farah Garane, Director General of the Ministry of Relief and Disaster Management of the Jubbaland administration, issued a stern warning to residents, urging them to prepare for potential challenges and disruptions.
Speaking to the Somali people, particularly those residing in Jubbaland, Director General Garane emphasized the need for proactive measures to address the anticipated risks associated with the upcoming spring rains. He highlighted the projected intensity of the rainfall.
Reflecting on past experiences, Director General Garane urged caution, citing previous instances where failure to heed warnings resulted in significant problems and devastation. He implored residents to “remain vigilant and not underestimate the potential dangers posed by flooding” , emphasizing the importance of preparedness and proactive action.
In addition to urging individual preparedness, Director General Garane called upon aid agencies operating in Jubbaland to actively participate in efforts to mitigate the threat of flooding. He stressed the importance of implementing measures such as constructing dams in areas prone to overflow from the Jubba River, emphasizing the need for collective action to safeguard vulnerable communities.
As part of precautionary measures, Director General Garane advised residents living near rivers and streams to evacuate to safer locations. He emphasized that the saturated ground, coupled with the potential for heavy rainfall, poses a significant risk and urged residents to exercise caution and refrain from returning to at-risk areas until the situation stabilizes.
The timely warning issued by the Ministry of Relief and Disaster Management of the Jubbaland administration comes in the wake of previous flooding events that devastated various regions of the country.
