MOGADISHU — H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, the Somali Prime Minister, chaired a high-level meeting in Mogadishu today to discuss the executive procedures and accelerate the implementation of the “Mogadishu Waterway Project,” a flagship national initiative aimed at modernizing infrastructure and enhancing the capital’s investment attractiveness.
According to the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), the meeting featured detailed briefings from the Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing, and the Banadir Regional Administration, alongside technical experts from the NAGAAD Project, covering the master plan, technical designs, and modern technologies to be deployed.
The Governor of Banadir Region, Mr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein, informed the meeting that initial efforts to reopen old drainage channels have yielded tangible results, while emphasizing the urgent need for new, sustainable drainage systems to permanently end the capital’s struggle with recurring floods.
Concurrently, the Ministry of Finance outlined the financial plans for the project, highlighting the Federal Government’s responsibilities and the strategic support provided by the World Bank for this massive national undertaking, which serves as a blueprint for infrastructure development in other Somali cities.
The meeting addressed the integrated roles of the Ministries of Blue Economy, Aviation, Internal Security, and Defense, where these entities submitted reports on coordination mechanisms to ensure national activities align with the waterway’s requirements while mitigating all security and logistical hurdles.
The Somali Prime Minister underscored that restoring Mogadishu’s urban aesthetics and climate resilience begins with modern drainage networks, directing all relevant institutions to initiate the project’s actual implementation with utmost urgency and unwavering commitment to the strategic goals.
The Mogadishu Waterway Project holds vital dimensions beyond urban planning, as it directly aims to safeguard public health by reducing waterborne diseases, improving general hygiene standards, and preserving the sustainable urban environmental balance.
Furthermore, the project targets the protection of critical economic assets, including road networks, residential areas, and commercial hubs, thereby fostering a safe and stable urban environment that supports long-term economic growth and attracts foreign capital.
The Federal Government of Somalia reaffirmed its full commitment to mobilizing all necessary resources to ensure the success of this transformative project, aiming to evolve Mogadishu into a modern, safe, and resilient capital ready for global investment.
The Mogadishu Waterway Project comes at a pivotal time as Somalia consolidates its post-stability era through major infrastructure projects; the collaboration with the World Bank in this regard testifies to the international confidence in Somalia’s financial recovery and its institutional capacity to manage national projects addressing complex urban crises.
