Geographical isolation cripples agricultural sector in Puntland

MOGADISHU — Agricultural communities in the Sanaag and Bari regions of the Puntland state, northeast Somalia, are facing dire economic and humanitarian challenges due to the lack of modern road networks. This infrastructure deficit has isolated hundreds of farmers in the “Al-Madu” and “Galgala” mountain ranges, amid harsh climatic and geological conditions.

Field reports published by “Al-Araby Al-Jadeed” indicate that recent rockslides and ground fissures in the mountainous areas have destroyed the rugged paths that serve as the sole link between these villages and vital commercial hubs, such as the city of Bosaso. This logistical collapse has resulted in the spoilage of vast quantities of produce, inflicting heavy financial losses on farmers amounting to thousands of dollars.

Local farmers stated to “Al-Araby Al-Jadeed” that the total halt of truck movements has prevented essential crops—including onions, tomatoes, mangoes, and olives—from reaching markets.

In a testimony shared with “Al-Araby Al-Jadeed,” farmer Ali Jama Farah highlighted that the crisis extends beyond economic loss to affect basic living standards and education, as geological fissures have caused the collapse of hundreds of homes.

On his part, Abdul Hakim Ahmed Farah, head of the “Al-Madu” Farmers Association, noted in statements carried by “Al-Araby Al-Jadeed” that more than 40 mountain villages are now in complete isolation. He emphasized that self-help efforts to repair the roads are insufficient against the scale of geological destruction, calling upon local authorities and international relief organizations to urgently rehabilitate infrastructure.

Somalia continues to experience severe climate changes and unusual geological phenomena, which have triggered mass displacement and exacerbated poverty levels within fragile communities that rely entirely on agricultural and pastoral production.
