Somalia and Türkiye sign strategic agreement to boost fisheries cooperation

ISTANBUL — H.E. Ahmed Hassan Adam, Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy of the Federal Republic of Somalia, affirmed that the strategic cooperation agreement recently concluded with Türkiye will serve as a vital pillar for supporting the Somali national economy and establishing a sustainable economic cooperation framework between the two friendly nations.

In an interview with the Anadolu Agency, the Minister explained that the agreement, signed with the Turkish Armed Forces Assistance Center (OYAK), opens broad horizons for investment in marine resources. He noted that all fishing licenses within Somalia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) will be exclusively organized and issued through the joint venture “SOM-TURK,” under the direct supervision and monitoring of the Somali Ministry of Fisheries.

The Anadolu Agency reported that the agreement aims to enhance Somalia’s capacity to monitor its coastline, control its territorial waters, and protect marine resources from illegal fishing in the Indian Ocean. Furthermore, it seeks to create job opportunities for Somali citizens by developing the infrastructure of the fisheries sector.

According to the Anadolu Agency, the agreement will enable the optimal and sustainable exploitation of Somalia’s rich marine resources, reflecting the depth of the strategic partnership between Mogadishu and Ankara. This collaboration is set to achieve mutual benefits for both nations in the fields of the blue economy and food security.
