MOGADISHU — H.E. Bashir Mohamed Jama, Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Republic of Somalia, has announced plans to scale up climate adaptation and environmental protection initiatives following an assessment mission to Galmudug State that revealed escalating damage to local communities and infrastructure.
According to local press sources, the Minister conducted field tours of several towns, including Hobyo and El-Buur, where he observed the severe impacts of climate change currently undermining livelihoods across central Somalia. In the coastal town of Hobyo, officials noted the encroachment of sand dunes that have submerged houses and forced residents to relocate—a phenomenon attributed by local press sources to intensifying land degradation and climatic shifts.
Local press sources reported that the Minister convened meetings with state officials and community leaders to evaluate immediate requirements, affirming that the federal administration will collaborate with Galmudug authorities to implement specialized adaptation strategies and mitigation projects aimed at safeguarding populated areas.
These actions are part of a national vision focused on establishing long-term ecological sustainability and protecting livelihoods in Somalia’s most climate-vulnerable zones
