Somalia repatriates 173 citizens released from detention in Libya

MOGADISHU — The Federal Government of Somalia has successfully completed the repatriation of 173 Somali citizens who were recently released from detention centres in Libya, officials confirmed.

A chartered aircraft transporting 151 returnees, the majority of whom were young people, arrived at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu. Senior government officials were on hand to welcome them.

An additional 22 citizens were flown separately to Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland.

The repatriation operation, which officials described as a crucial component of the government’s sustained efforts to safeguard the rights and welfare of Somali nationals abroad, included those held under harsh conditions.

Upon arrival, several of the returnees spoke to the media, expressing profound relief and gratitude for being brought home from the often difficult and dangerous circumstances in the Libyan centres.

The EU Special Envoy commended the operation, simultaneously pledging continued international support to ensure safe and dignified returns for vulnerable Somali migrants.

The Somali government reaffirmed its call for sustained cooperation with international and regional partners to address the challenges facing its citizens overseas and to develop sustainable solutions aimed at preventing irregular migration.
