Horn of Africa forecasted to experience dry weather until December

NAIRONI — The Climate Prediction and Applications Center of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has forecasted that the Horn of Africa will experience drier-than-usual conditions from October to December.

In its latest forecast, the center stated that these conditions are expected over most parts of Somalia, Djibouti, coastal Sudan and Eritrea, southern Ethiopia, Kenya, and central to southern Uganda and Tanzania.

The report, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency, also indicated that warmer-than-average conditions are expected across most of the region, with the highest probabilities in parts of Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, and Tanzania.

Traditionally, the October-to-December period has been a rainy season, allowing farmers to plant a second crop after the March-to-May rains. However, climate change has disrupted these weather patterns, posing a threat to food security in the region.

The report noted that the dry conditions are expected to affect food security in the region, where 72 million people are currently food insecure, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization and IGAD.
