28 Somali students head to Azerbaijan on government scholarships

ANKARA — The Somali Embassy in Ankara announced that 28 Somali students have been granted government scholarships to study in Azerbaijan. Nineteen students have already arrived in the capital, Baku, with the remaining nine expected in the coming days.

According to Hiiraan Online, the students will pursue vital fields such as petroleum science, engineering, medicine, and computer science, which Somali officials consider essential for the country’s reconstruction and economic development.

The students were welcomed at Baku International Airport by officials from the Somali embassy and representatives from the host Azerbaijani universities. During the reception, the Somali Ambassador to Turkey, Fathudin Ali Mohamed, congratulated the students and urged them to dedicate themselves to their studies, emphasizing that their success will strengthen both Somalia’s future and their own.

These scholarships are part of bilateral cooperation agreements signed in Baku in February 2025, where the Somali and Azerbaijani presidents pledged to deepen collaboration in the fields of education, energy, and defense.

Subsequently, the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister announced in July that 20 scholarships would be reserved for Somali students for 2025, underscoring the importance both governments place on academic exchanges.

These scholarships are part of Azerbaijan’s state-funded international integration program, which aims to provide higher education opportunities for students from developing countries.
