Saudi Arabia leads Arab efforts to support education in conflict-affected countries

TUNIS — The “Information Day,” proposed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was held at the headquarters of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) in Tunis. The event aimed to monitor the needs and damages affecting the educational, cultural, and scientific sectors in Arab countries suffering from conflicts, crises, disasters, and emergencies.

This step is part of an effort to enhance communication and coordination with these nations and to determine their technical and financial needs, based on Saudi Arabia’s active role as the President of the organization’s Executive Council.

The “Information Day,” which was embraced and engaged with by Arab countries, reviewed the experiences and insights of Sudan, Syria, Somalia, Libya, Lebanon, and Yemen. The event featured detailed presentations and reports that reflected the reality of the educational, cultural, and scientific situations in these countries through figures and events.

In his speech, the President of the ALECSO Executive Council and representative of Saudi Arabia, Hani bin Muqbil Al-Muqbil, explained that this day reflects the Council’s commitment to the work it decided upon 15 months ago, following the approval of a Libyan proposal to include a permanent item on this matter. This was followed by a Saudi initiative to form a special committee and then a proposal to hold this day, which represents an integrated effort among Arab countries.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Al-Muqbil noted that the goal is to highlight the potential support that can be provided to these countries, which need the Council more than ever.

For his part, the Director-General of ALECSO, Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, stated that the “Information Day” confirms the commitment of all—the organization and member states—to strengthening solidarity to face these challenges. He explained that ministers from the concerned countries were contacted to identify their needs and submit a report on the matter.

In turn, the Head of the Follow-up Committee, Dr. Ali Kassem Al-Samad, affirmed that education, culture, and science are not luxuries but are essential, even in the most difficult circumstances. He thanked Saudi Arabia for its sponsorship and attention to the committee, pointing out that the “Information Day” is a result of the vision of the President of the Executive Council.

The holding of this event is part of the follow-up on the implementation of the Executive Council’s decisions, following its approval of the Saudi proposal during its 123rd session. This coincided with the approval to form a follow-up committee headed by Lebanon with 10 member countries, including Saudi Arabia, as confirmed by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

It is worth noting that the organization’s General Conference had approved in May 2024 a Libyan proposal to permanently include this item on the agenda.
