MOGADISHU — In an unprecedented strategic move to bolster Somalia’s readiness for disasters, the Somali National Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) announced the launch of the implementation phase for the construction of an Emergency Operations Center for the Northeast Regional State. This project, whose cornerstone was laid by the Prime Minister last April, represents a paradigm shift in the nation’s efforts to establish a sustainable infrastructure for crisis response.
The center, along with its logistical warehouse, will serve as a vital shield against the severe climate challenges the region frequently faces, such as droughts and floods. It will allow for the pre-positioning of essential relief supplies, ensuring a swift and effective response during any crisis and thereby mitigating the humanitarian impact on the population.
In his remarks, SoDMA Chairman, Mahmud Moalim Abdulle, affirmed that the center “is not just a building; it is a fundamental pillar of our nation’s resilience. This project reflects our government’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of all Somalis.”
For his part, the State Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Abdirisaaq Yusuf Mohamed, noted that the center “will be a game-changer, enabling us to coordinate with partners and reach affected communities faster than ever before. It is a direct investment in the security and future of this state.”
This project underscores Somalia’s commitment to building a more resilient and secure society in the face of future challenges.
