GALKAYO — A young Somali doctor was killed in an armed attack in the central city of Galkayo in what is suspected to be a clan-motivated conflict, according to a report from the Shabelle Media Network.
Local and security sources reported that Dr. Omar Abdi Dahir was shot by unknown assailants who fled the scene.
This is the second incident this year in which a doctor has been killed in the city, amid renewed tensions between rival clans in Galkayo, which lies on the administrative boundary between the Puntland and Galmudug regional states, a situation also highlighted by the Shabelle Media Network in its coverage.
Local authorities have announced the opening of an investigation into the incident, though no suspects have been arrested. A senior security official in the region affirmed that security forces will not allow criminals to escape justice and are continuing their efforts to track down those responsible for targeted assassinations.
Residents and analysts suggest that lingering tribal feuds are the likely cause of the incident, while Galkayo remains a flashpoint for violence despite joint efforts to improve security.
