ADDIS ABABA – His Excellency President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia addressed the Second Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, emphasizing the urgent need for a unified continental response to the increasing impacts of climate change.
President Mohamud highlighted that despite Somalia’s minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, the nation remains disproportionately vulnerable to climate shocks. He cited the severe 2021-2023 drought, which affected 7.8 million people and led to significant displacement and economic hardship, as a critical example of the ongoing crisis.
The President detailed several national initiatives launched by Somalia to enhance its resilience, including the submission of its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), the ambitious “Green Somalia Initiative” aimed at planting 10 million trees, and the establishment of a National Climate Fund.
Concluding his address, President Mohamud urged the international community and African nations to transition from dialogue to decisive, unified action. He stressed that the summit must achieve meaningful, continent-wide outcomes to effectively confront the climate crisis, which poses a severe threat to security and stability.
