King Salman center launches 4th phase of food aid

MOGADISHU — In a new humanitarian effort, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) has launched the fourth phase of its food security project in the Federal Republic of Somalia, with generous support from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The project aims to alleviate the suffering of approximately 850,000 people affected by drought and natural disasters by distributing over 5,000 tons of food baskets.

The launch took place during a ceremony hosted by the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) at its headquarters in Mogadishu. The event was attended by representatives from various local and international bodies, including the League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), underscoring the importance of partnership and cooperation in humanitarian work.

An Emphasis on Deep Humanitarian Ties

His Excellency the Saudi Ambassador to Somalia, Mr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Mawlid, delivered a speech in which he affirmed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting the brotherly Somali people. He stressed that this project is an extension of the deep-rooted fraternal relations between the two nations and praised the tireless efforts of the Saudi leadership in providing humanitarian aid to the Federal Republic of Somalia, noting that the Kingdom has always been a pioneer in extending a helping hand.

For his part, the Director of KSrelief’s Africa Branch, Mr. Yazeed Abdullah Hamoud, pointed out that the project is part of a comprehensive package of initiatives the center is implementing in Somalia. These initiatives are designed to improve living conditions in vital sectors, including food security, health, education, and water.

He added that this relief aid will cover all regions of Somalia, reaching more than 850,000 beneficiaries.

In the same context, His Excellency Ambassador Abdullah Al-Otaibi, Ambassador of the League of Arab States, expressed the League’s appreciation for the Kingdom’s leading humanitarian role. He emphasized that the project embodies the values of Arab and Islamic solidarity and enhances efforts toward development and stability in the region.

The Director-General of the OIC Regional Mission, Ambassador Mohamed Bamba Mohamed, also praised the Kingdom’s humanitarian efforts, noting that this initiative comes within the framework of joint cooperation with KSrelief to serve common interests and strengthen Islamic humanitarian work.

In a statement from the UN OCHA representative, Mr. Blaise Kabungu, he commended the partnership with KSrelief, stressing that this support represents a crucial step in addressing the humanitarian crisis and ensures aid reaches the most vulnerable groups with the highest possible efficiency.

The Chairman of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, concluded the ceremony by expressing his profound gratitude to KSrelief and all partners. He noted that the project will enhance Somalia’s ability to respond to humanitarian emergencies and effectively contribute to alleviating the suffering of families affected by natural disasters.

Details of Saudi Humanitarian Support

It is worth noting that the value of humanitarian and relief projects implemented by KSrelief in Somalia has reached $248 million to date, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to providing continuous and comprehensive support to the Somali people.
