Somalia launches national climate forum to boost adaptation efforts

MOGADISHU — The activities of the National Forum on Autumn Climate Outlook (OND) kicked off today in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The two-day event aims to enhance national capacities to confront the challenges of climate change.

The launch of this forum is part of the Somali government’s efforts to establish a scientific foundation for dealing with extreme climate phenomena and protecting citizens from their anticipated effects. The inaugural session witnessed high-level participation from government officials, international experts, and representatives of humanitarian organizations.

The forum was opened by H.E. Hussein Haji Ali, Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change, who emphasized the great importance of the event in building an integrated national strategy to deal with climate change.

The first day’s activities focused on the importance of accurate climate forecasts, with experts from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) providing analytical presentations on how to use these forecasts for early warnings and disaster prevention.

Dr. Guled Abdulkadir Artan from the WMO noted that Somalia is one of the countries most affected by climate change, while Mr. Mahmoud Moalim Abdulle, Chairman of SoDMA, stressed the importance of proactive disaster preparedness.

The Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries, along with the Chair of the Natural Resources Committee in the People’s Assembly, participated in the forum, reflecting a broad government commitment to integrating climate issues across various sectors
