Somalia launches national climate fund in a historic move

MOGADISHU — In a significant step to strengthen its capabilities in confronting the escalating repercussions of climate change, Somalia has announced the launch of its National Climate Fund. This new strategic tool is designed to unify and channel climate finance towards vital projects and the most affected communities.

The fund was officially inaugurated during a two-day workshop in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, as reported by the news website Hiiraan Online.

Established by a presidential decree, the fund is intended to serve as an effective national mechanism for raising and managing financial resources for climate action from international and regional sources.

The fund will facilitate Somalia’s access to financing from prestigious global entities such as the Green Climate Fund, the Adaptation Fund, and the Global Environment Facility, with the goal of implementing climate adaptation and mitigation projects.

In statements quoted by Hiiraan Online, Bihi Iman Egeh, Minister of Finance and Chairman of the Fund’s Board, affirmed that climate finance has become a “strategic priority.” He noted that the fund will enhance the government’s ability to manage these resources with transparency and effectiveness, ensuring they reach the communities most in need.

For his part, Lieutenant General Bashir Mohamed Jama, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, stressed that the fund’s launch reflects a comprehensive governmental approach to addressing climate issues, as its board of directors includes representatives from various ministries, government institutions, the private sector, and civil society, according to Hiiraan Online.

The fund’s Executive Director, Liban Obsiye, stated that its role is not limited to meeting immediate needs but also extends to investing in the country’s long-term stability and sustainable development, while protecting the most vulnerable groups from the increasing impacts of climate change.

The Somali government hopes that the fund will enhance its credibility with international donors and ensure accountability in resource utilization, with top priority given to supporting communities on the front lines of climate change impacts.
