MOGADISHU — In a move that reflects humanitarian solidarity and transcends existing political differences, authorities in the self-declared Republic of Somaliland announced today the receipt of $700,000 from the Somali Federal Government for drought relief.
The Awdal region’s drought commission stated that the funds, aimed at supporting relief efforts in the drought-affected area, have been deposited into government accounts and will be directed to assist communities most severely impacted by the harsh weather conditions.
A spokesperson for the commission, in a statement to the media, noted that “cooperation between Somaliland and Somalia during disasters like drought is customary, regardless of political differences.”
This support comes in response to directives from Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who ordered the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) to provide urgent aid to the affected areas in Awdal.
This initiative serves as a testament to the shared commonalities that transcend the political tensions that have existed since Somaliland declared independence in 1991.
