ROME — Somali officials have confirmed that at least 23 Somali nationals have died after two migrant boats capsized in the Mediterranean Sea near the Italian island of Lampedusa. The boats, which were transporting migrants from North Africa to Europe, suffered mechanical failures before sinking.
According to the Shabelle Media Network, 15 survivors have been rescued, and search operations are ongoing in the area for additional missing individuals.
In a statement, Somalia’s Ambassador to Italy, Ibrahim Omar Shegow, emphasized that “this tragic incident underscores the immense dangers faced by Somali migrants who embark on irregular sea journeys in search of better opportunities in Europe.”
Ambassador Shegow urged young Somalis not to risk their lives on these perilous sea routes, encouraging them to instead seek opportunities within their home country.
As reported by the Shabelle Media Network, he highlighted the urgent need for awareness campaigns and tangible economic opportunities that could deter youth from attempting the dangerous migration journey across the Mediterranean.
The Mediterranean remains one of the world’s deadliest migration routes. The International Organization for Migration reports that hundreds of people have died this year while attempting to reach Europe by sea.
