Somalia & IGAD unite efforts to advance refugee rights

MOGADISHU — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) announced via its official page on platform (X) the launch of a specialized National Dialogue in Mogadishu, focusing on improving access to identity documentation for asylum seekers and refugees in Somalia.

The three-day dialogue, running from August 19 to 21, 2025, seeks to enhance the recognition and acceptance of new refugee documents by government institutions and the private sector, ensuring access to essential services.

Speaking on behalf of IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the IGAD Head of Mission to the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mohamoud Kaarshe, reaffirmed the Somali government’s strong commitment to protecting the rights of refugees and internally displaced persons through progressive policies and laws, including the Refugee Act and the IDP Policy.

This initiative reflects IGAD’s broader regional framework on refugee protection, supporting access to documentation and advancing durable solutions for displaced populations. The workshop is supported by the Government of Sweden under the Protection and Solutions for Displaced Persons Project (PSDP), which promotes regional cooperation and empowers displaced communities to rebuild their lives with dignity.

By linking policy frameworks with tangible action on the ground, IGAD seeks to reinforce humanitarian solidarity and justice across the region.
