Talks in Mogadishu focus on strengthening Somalia-IOM partnership

MOGADISHU — In a strategic move to enhance international cooperation and push forward Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (2025–2029), Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre hosted Ms. Ugochi Daniels, Deputy Director General for Operations at the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at his office in Mogadishu, according to Radio Dalsan.

Discussions focused on aligning IOM’s mission with Somalia’s flagship roadmap for stability and reform. PM Barre emphasized the urgency of expediting impactful projects that address the country’s development gaps.

“We value IOM’s crucial role. Now is the time to scale up collaboration and ensure every project meets our people’s real needs,” said PM Barre, as reported by Radio Dalsan.

Ms. Daniels reiterated IOM’s commitment to Somalia’s recovery and announced the agency’s readiness to scale up its operations in support of the government’s transformation goals, Radio Dalsan added.

Separately, Shabelle Media Network reported that Daniels also held a productive meeting on Tuesday with the Chairman of Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mohamud Moallim Abdulle. The session centered on improving humanitarian coordination amid ongoing crises like drought, displacement, and climate change.

Both parties agreed to accelerate joint humanitarian efforts based on innovation and sustainability to effectively reach vulnerable populations, according to Shabelle Media Network. They pledged continued partnership to ensure fast and targeted humanitarian relief.

The IOM remains one of Somalia’s long-standing partners in migration governance, disaster response, and community stabilization. The synchronized diplomatic and technical engagement—highlighted by both Radio Dalsan and Shabelle Media Network—underscores Somalia’s resolve to build resilient systems with support from key international allies.
