Gedo violence forces dozens of families across the border

MOGADISHU — According to field sources and the Kenya Red Cross Society, as reported by Hiiraan Online (HOL), eight Somali families have arrived in Mandera, a Kenyan border town, after fleeing intensified clashes in Somalia’s Gedo region between federal forces and militias aligned with the Jubbaland administration.

The families crossed into Kenya via the strategic border town of Beled Hawo following escalating violence in the area, HOL reports.

Officials from the Kenya Red Cross, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Mandera County authorities, confirmed the peaceful reception of the displaced families, providing them with urgent humanitarian aid including food, shelter, and primary healthcare. A Red Cross official told HOL:

“These families crossed the border to escape violence, and we are providing them with essential relief services.”

According to Hiiraan Online (HOL), Kenyan authorities have begun contingency planning for the possible arrival of more displaced families should the conflict in Gedo continue to deteriorate. Coordination between the Red Cross, Ministry of Interior, and Mandera County government remains active to closely monitor the situation along the border.

Local officials highlighted the strong cultural and familial ties between Mandera residents and neighboring Somali communities, affirming their commitment to treat the displaced with dignity and respect.

The renewed hostilities in Gedo, driven by political and military tensions between Somalia’s federal government and the Jubbaland administration, have led to significant internal and cross-border displacement. Reports from HOL warn of a worsening humanitarian crisis amid strained healthcare and logistical capacities in affected areas.
