UK ambassador calls for prisoners exchange between Somaliland and Khaatumo

HARGEISA — The UK government has initiated intense mediation efforts between the administrations of SSC-Khatumo and Somaliland, who are still in conflict over parts of the Sool and Sanag regions.

The UK Ambassador for Somali Affairs, Mike Nithavrianakis, leading this initiative, recently met with the newly appointed peace committee by Somaliland’s new president, Abdirahman Irro, to discuss the tensions between the two sides.

Mike Nithavrianakis, speaking about the mediation efforts, proposed that the two administrations first work on exchanging prisoners they are holding, followed by efforts to establish peace in the region. He also called for the reopening of closed roads and the resumption of cross-border trade to alleviate the situation in the affected areas.

This development comes amid ongoing tensions between Somaliland and SSC. They recently clashed in the Erigavo area, and their forces are still facing off in contested regions. Somaliland remains determined to reclaim the territories it lost, while SSC aims to consolidate its control over the Sool and Sanag regions.
