NEWYORK — In a statement released by the UNICEF working humanitarian and children protection based New York City urged authorities to investigate and bring in hand whoever behind on the health personnel massacred in Somalia.
“We are shocked and saddened by the unnecessary abduction and killing of the 7 health workers and one civilian at a health center run by our implementing partner, Zamzam Foundation, in Gololey village, southern Somalia,” said UNICEF in a statement.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to their families and co-workers but attacks on health workers are a violation of international law and must not be tolerated during Health workers in Somalia often risk their lives every day working tirelessly to help mothers and babies stay healthy – heroes working on the frontlines” added UNICEF.
UNICEF has been working in Somalia since 1972 as now more than three hundred staffs are on duty in Baidoa, Dollow, Garowe, and Hargeisa delivering programmes including Health, Nutrition, WASH, Education, Child Protection, responds to emergencies, supports peacebuilding and social development.
