MOGADISHU —<\/strong> The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) has condemned Wednesday\u2019s attack in the capital Mogadishu which left at least nine people dead and fourteen others wounded.<\/p>\n

The responsibility of the attack was claimed by al-Shabaab, which has waged an Islamist war in the Horn of African nation for over a decade.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia denied reports that any of its personnel was targeted in the attack and expresses its condolences to the families of its victims, and wishes a speedy recovery for those who were injured.<\/p>\n

\u201dContrary to some initial reports, there were no United Nations personnel or contractors in the convoy targeted in the suicide attack earlier today in Mogadishu,\u201d read part of the statement.<\/p>\n

Al-Shabaab suicide car bomber detonated on 21 October Street in Mogadishu\u2019s Waberi district, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The statement by the UN comes hours after Somali Somali police spokesman Abdifatah Adan said nine people were killed including United Nations officials in the attack.<\/p>\n

According to the spokesman, 14 people were also wounded in today\u2019s suicide bombing.<\/p>\n

The Somali National Army (SNA) backed by the African Union Mission in Somalia drove al-Shabaab out of Mogadishu in 2011, but the terror group is still capable of conducting attacks, targeting government installations, hotels, restaurants and public places.<\/p>\n
