MOGADISHU —<\/strong> At least 8 people have been killed and 9 others injured in a suicide car bomb explosion targeting a UN security convoy on 21st road in Mogadishu\u2019s Waberi district near Aden Abdulle International Airport.<\/p>\n

Residents of Banadir reported hearing a loud bang at noon local time as a plume of smoke was seen billowing into the air.<\/p>\n

Pictures taken from the scene depicted wreckage of mangled vehicles and devastated buildings scattered everyone.<\/p>\n

Al Amin Ambulance reported seeing several dead bodies of people sprawled on the ground.<\/p>\n

Al- Shabaab militant group through their Andalus radio immediately claimed responsibility for the attack and said that the suicide bomber targeted white men who were passing the area.<\/p>\n

It was not immediately clear if any of the UN personnel were among the casualties.<\/p>\n

Somalia government spokesperson Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimu said the Somali government condemns the attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch acts of terrorism will not derail the peace and the ongoing development in the country. We must unite in the fight against terrorism,\u201d tweeted Moalimu.<\/p>\n

Al- Shabaab has in recent weeks stepped up attacks on the Somali government in Galmudug and Hirshabelle states where they killed two senior Somali military commanders in the town of Adakibir in the outskirts of Galgadud district however Somali government officials told the media that they had killed 12 militants in the attack.<\/p>\n

Al-Shabab who control a large swathe of land in Southern and Central Somalia has been fighting to topple the internationally-backed Federal government of Somalia\u2019s for years to establish its own rule b
\npremised on its strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia ( law).<\/p>\n

The group frequently stages and carries out bombings and gun assaults in government installations, buildings and on government soldiers.<\/p>\n
