MOGADISHU —<\/strong> Somalia has recorded 53 new cases of Coronavirus in the last 24 hours raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Horn of African Nation to 15,456.<\/span><\/p>\n

Out of the new cases, 29 males and 24 are female according to the health ministry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two people have succumbed to the virus raising the total number of Covid-19 deaths to 813.<\/span><\/p>\n

Benadir and Puntland have a surge of positive cases with the two administrative regions recording 31 and 17 cases.<\/span><\/p>\n

Benadir which covers the city of Mogadishu has been leading in the number of new infections in recent weeks, on some days accounting for almost half of the daily infections.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mogadishu recorded 31 new cases from the total 53 cases reported on Sunday evening, which is more than 50 per cent of the infections recorded by the ministry of health.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Saturday, the capital recorded 32 out of the 45 cases and 19 of the 35 cases recorded on Thursday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Somalia rolled out its mass vaccinations on March 16, having received 300,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines under the COVAX facility but there has been a challenge as most of the population do not accept to be vaccinated.<\/span><\/p>\n

On April 11, the horn of African country received 200,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccines donated by China to boost its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n
